This group and the corresponding project originated in the "Programa Institucional de Bolsas de Iniciação Científica da Universidade de Brasília" (PIBIC-UnB, now PIC-UnB), a funding program from the Brazilian federal government, between 2000 and 2001. As many undergraduates followed suit, the PEJ was officially founded on July 2001, although research properly related to the project's aims began sometime earlier.

If you want more information on the group and the on-going projects, go to the projects' page.

The PEJ has official recognition by the CNPq, as it appears in the Diretório dos Grupos de Pesquisa in Brazil.

Summing up the PEJ's main proposal, we can say that the group has devoted itself to the study of the intersections between religion, historiography and millenarian expectation in the Hellenistic-Roman world. To achieve its objectives, the group concentrates on four research branches:

* Apocalyptic literature, millenarism and popular unrest

* Metahistorical conceptions in Ancient historiography

* Religious syncretism in the Hellenistic-Roman world

* Primitive Christianity, Patristics and Gnosticism

Researchers and undergraduate students linked to the PEJ are concluding degrees in History or have just finished them; they intend, through work in the PEJ, to fill a serious gap in the field of the study of the relations between Judaism and Hellenism in Brazil. Consultants to the project are leading scholars in Ancient History, Theology or related areas.

Besides the blog listed on the menu, the PEJ also keeps 2 discussion groups (for registered members only) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pej-unb/ and another group only for students involved with "Iniciação Científica" projects at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pej-unb-PIC/.
